Place Ducale is the main square of Charleville-Mezieres. Built in 1606 by Clement Métezeau, it is also the twin sister of the Place des Vosges in Paris.
It is thanks to the financial effort of Charles Gonzaga, nephew of Henry IV, Duke of Nevers and Duke of Rethel, governor of Champagne, the place was born.
Place Ducale is a rectangle 127 meters long and wide from 90 meters with 27 Henri style pavilions IV and Louis XIII obeying Rule 4: 4 bays 4 bays on each floor, 4 skylights and 4 oculi on the roof.
Initially paved, it is then time covered with tar to be repaved in 1999. The focus has also often been changed: a fountain until 1899 which gives way to a statue representing Charles Gonzaga. The place is listed as a historic monument in 1936.
The statue of Charles de Gonzague was moved again in 1999 to put a copy of the original fountain.
